In 1925 the New York Americans, a team in the fledgling National Hockey League, started playing at Madison Square Gardens. The team drew so well that the Gardens broke its agreement not to let-out the facility to any other hockey team. MSG president Tex Rickard applied for a franchise of the Garden’s own. For the rest of the NHL, the prospect of having two teams playing at the premier sports arena in the country was too tempting. The poor Americans got steamrolled and a second New York NHL franchise was granted for the 1926-27 season. The team was going to be called the Giants, but the nickname “Tex’s Rangers,” was quickly hung on the team by New York sportswriters and the New York Rangers they became.

The New York Rangers have won the Stanley Cup four times, most recently in 1994. The team’s previous Stanley Cup win was over a half of a century earlier, in 1940. 1994 was also the last time the team won its division, though the team did make it to the Conference Finals in 1997, losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in five.

The Rangers have made the playoffs every season since the 2004-05 lockout. Even if they haven’t made it far, it’s an improvement over the seven years before the lockout, when they missed the NHL playoffs entirely. In 2006 the team finished with 100 points, which was good enough for just third in an extremely competitive Atlanta Division that year, only to be swept in the Quarterfinals by the New Jersey Devils. In 2007 they finished third again and swept the Atlanta Thrashers in the first round before being eliminated by the Buffalo Sabres in six in the Semifinals. Last season the team finished third for the third consecutive year and eliminated the New Jersey Devils in the playoffs before falling to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The New York Rangers are looking good for a deep run in the 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The New York Rangers are in the Atlantic Division of the 3-division Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League.
