The Los Angeles Kings entered the National Hockey League in the 1967-68 season and made it to the playoffs on their first try, losing to the Minnesota North Stars in seven in the Quarterfinals. Since 1999 home ice for the Kings has been the Staple Center in downtown Los Angeles. Before setting up shop in the Staple Center the Kings played out of the Forum in the Los Angeles suburb of Inglewood for thirty-two years.
The Los Angeles Kings have only won their division once in their forty years in the NHL, despite having Wayne Gretsky as a player from 1988-1996. The most successful season in franchise history was 1992-93, when it made its only appearance to date in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals. The low regular season point total did not bode well for the postseason and few expected much. But the Kings eliminated the Calgary Flames in the Quarterfinals in six, the Vancouver Canucks in six in the Semis and the Toronto Maple Leafs in seven in the Conference Finals before falling to the Montreal Canadiens in five.
The Kings’ last appearance in the postseason was 2002, a seven game loss in the Quarterfinals to the Colorado Avalanche. In twenty-three postseason appearances, the Los Angeles Kings playoff series win-loss record is 11-23.
In the 2008 off-season, after missing the playoffs for the 5th season in a row and finishing the regular season with the second worst record in the NHL, head coach Marc Crawford was fired. In July the club hired former Philadelphia Flyer head coach Terry Murray, as the 22nd head coach in the 40 year history of the franchise history. In the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, the Kings selected defenseman Drew Doughty second overall and Colten Teubert thirteenth overall.
