The Florida Panthers play out of the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida, a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale. They joined the National Hockey League for the 1993-94 season as part of a two team expansion that included the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. In their third season in the League the Panthers, who had not been to the playoffs previously, made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. They finished the regular season with 92 points, in third place in the Atlantic Division. In the first round they faced the Boston Bruins and took them out in five. The Pittsburgh Penguins were handled in 6 in the Semis and it took the full seven games to eliminate a determined Philadelphia Flyers team for the Conference Finals. In the Stanley Cup Finals the Panthers were swept in four straight by the Colorado Avalanche.
The team has only been back to the playoffs twice since appearing in the 1994 Finals. In 1997 the New York Rangers took them out in five the Quarterfinals and in 2000 the New Jersey Devils eliminated the Washington Capitals in the fist round in 4 straight.
In the three seasons played since the cancellation of the 2004-05 season due to a labor lockout the Florida Panthers have not made the playoffs. They finished the 2007-08 season 38-35-0-9, for 85 points and third place in the Southeast. The GM of the Washington Capitals is Jacques Martin, familiar to NHL fans as head coach of the Ottawa Senators from 1996-2004. Martin was almost immediately hired by the Florida Panthers. He assumed general manager duties with the resignation of Mike Keenan in September of 2006. The knock on Martin has been his lack of playoff success: he’s never won a Stanley Cup despite becoming only the ninth coach to coach 1000+ NHL games. But people forget that Martin’s winning percentage has him tied for the tenth winningest coach in NHL history. After three seasons as head coach and two as head coach/GM, the team announced in April, 2008 that Martin would not be the head coach for the 2008-09 season, though he remains the team’s GM. Ontario Hockey League 2003 Coach of the Year Peter DeBoer will make his NHL head coaching debut with the 2008-09 Florida Panthers.
The Florida Panthers are in the Southeast Division of the 3-division Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League
