The Dallas Stars began life as the Minnesota North Stars, playing out of the Met Center in the St. Paul suburb of Bloomington for 26 seasons and two appearances in the Stanley Cup Final before moving to Texas, where they have played as the Dallas Stars since the 1993-94 season. In the team’s first season in Dallas they made the playoffs but lost in the Semifinal round to the eventual 1994 Stanley Cup Champion Vancouver Canucks.
The Stars have now played 14 complete seasons in Dallas and the team’s record has been impressive. They have only failed to qualify for the postseason twice, 1996 and 2002. In the Dallas Stars’ twelve postseason appearances they have played 25 playoff series for a 13-12 playoff won-loss record. They have seven Division Championships (1997 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2006), all in since 1997. The club has won two Conference Championships and one Stanley Cup.
In 1999 the Stars eliminated the Edmonton Oilers in the Quarterfinals, the St. Louis Blues in the Semifinals and the Colorado Avalanche in the Conference Finals before bringing the Cup to Texas for the first time with a six game defeat of the Buffalo Sabres. The following season the Dallas Stars looked to repeat, rolling over the Oilers (4-1), the San Jose Sharks (4-1) and the Avalanche (4-3) before losing in the 2000 NHL Stanley Cup Finals to the New Jersey Devils (2-4). Since the resumption of play following the 2004-05 lockout the Dallas Stars have set on odd pattern. The fewer points they amass in the regular season the better they do in the playoffs. In 2006 the club finished the regular season with 112 points and lost in five to the Avalanche in the Quarterfinals. In 2007 they finished the regular season with 5 fewer points but last 2 more games in the postseason, falling in 7 in the Quarterfinals to the Vancouver Canucks. In the most recent playoffs the Stars finished third in the division with 97 points but went all the way to the Conference Finals, defeating the Ducks in the first round and the San Jose Sharks in the Semis. The franchises missed out on a third appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals when in lost in six to the Detroit Red Wings.
The Dallas Stars are in the Pacific Division of the 3-division Western Conference of the National Hockey League.
