The Carolina Hurricanes started in 1971 as the New England Whalers, the Boston, Massachusetts franchise of the World Hockey Association. The club never really got settled, playing home games at the Boston Arena, the Boston Garden and The Big E Coliseum in West Springfield over the course of its first three years. The team moved to Hartford in 1975 and became one of the strongest of the WHA franchises. In 1979 the WHA merged with the National Hockey League, bringing the Whalers, Edmonton Oilers, Quebec Nordiques (now the Colorado Avalanche) and the Winnipeg Jets (now the Phoenix Coyotes) to the NHL. The NHL wasn’t kind. The Hartford Whalers had only three winning seasons, with the high point being in 1986 when the team eliminated the Nordiques in the first round and took the Montreal Canadiens to overtime of the seventh game in the second. The Hartford metropolitan area was the smallest market of any NHL franchise, and the Whalers found it tough to compete and stay financially viable. In 1998 owner Peter Karmanos relocated the franchises to Raleigh, North Carolina and the new Entertainment and Sports Arena. He renamed the team the Carolina Hurricanes. As the Carolina Hurricanes the franchise has been up and down. In its 10 seasons in Raleigh the Carolina Hurricanes hockey club has made the playoffs four times. In those four post-season appearance they have been eliminated in the Quarterfinals twice, losing in six to the Boston Bruins in the 1999 Stanley Cup Playoffs and losing in six to the New Jersey Devils two seasons later. However, the other two times the ‘Caines made it to the post-season, they tore it up. In the 2002 NHL playoffs the team made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. After getting revenge on the Devils for eliminating them in the first round the previous season, the Hurricanes knocked off the Montreal Canadiens in the Semifinals and the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Conference Finals before losing to the Detroit Red Wings in 5 in the Finals. In the 2006 playoffs the team eliminated the Canadiens and the Devils rather easily and then gutted it out through consecutive seven game series against the Buffalo Sabres and the Oilers to win the franchises first Stanley Cup. The Carolina Hurricanes are in the Southeast Division of the 3-division Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. Awesomeseating.com offers cheap tickets and luxury tickets for all NHL teams.
