Founded in 1924, the Boston Bruins are one of the Original Six. The Original Six is the name given to the NHL franchises that survived the league’s Depression-era contraction. Since the end of World War II the Boston Bruins have been Stanley Cup Champs twice, in 1969-70 and 1971-72.
In the three seasons since the 2004-05 lockout the Boston Bruins have only made the playoffs once, in 2007-08. In 2005-06 the team finished with 73 points – the second lowest since the 1967 expansion. They were last in their division and out of the playoffs. The 2006-2007 season was a carbon copy of the previous year, with the team dead last in the division, only 2 points better in total points and out of the playoffs.
In the 2007 off-season a major shake-up occurred in the Boston Bruins front office. Two weeks short of his first anniversary as head coach of the Boston Bruins, Dave Lewis was fired, as was power-play coach Marc Habscheid. Lewis was replaced by Claude Julien, whom the New Jersey Devils had let go late in the 2006–07 season. Craig Ramsay and Geoff Ward were later added as assistant coaches. The shake-up worked: the Bruins finished the 2007-08 season 18 points and 2 places better and made it back into the NHL Playoffs. The team fell to the Montreal Canadiens in a hard fought seven game Quarterfinal series.
The Boston Bruins are in the Northeast Division of the 3-division Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League.
