Team History
The Sacramento Kings franchise started as the Rochester Royals of the National Basketball League in Rochester, New York. Founded in 1945, the team won the 1946 and 1947 NBL championships. In 1948 the Royals, Fort Wayne (Detroit) Pistons, Minneapolis (Los Angeles) Lakers and Indianapolis Jets moved to the rival Basketball Association of America. In 1949 the BAA and NBL merged, becoming the National Basketball Association. The Royals beat the Knicks in seven in the 1951 NBA Finals.
In 1957 the Royals moved to Cincinnati. The team struggled with low ticket sales until 1972, when they moved to Kansas City. The team was renamed the Kings to avoid confusion with the baseball Kansas City Royals. The franchise became the Sacramento Kings in 1985. The 1951 win over the Knicks remains the team’s only NBA title to date. They have won the division title five times, most recently in 2002 and 2003. In 2004 the Kings lost in the Semifinals in seven to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In 2005 they lost in the First Round to the Seattle SuperSonics and in 2006 they lost in the First Round to San Antonio.
The Sacremento Kings finished out of the playoffs the past two seasons, despite finishing both regular seasons with more wins than they had the last two seasons they made the playoffs.
2008-2009
The Sacramento Kings have not made the NBA playoffs since losing in the first round to the San Antonio in 2006. In 2006-07 the team finished out of the playoffs at 33-49. In 2007-08 they improved by 5 games but would have needed to improve by 17 to make the playoffs in the very competitive division in 2007-08.
On July 29, 2008 the Kings issued a statement confirming rumors that forward Ron Artest would be traded. The deal sent Artest and the rights to Patrick Ewing Jr and Sean Singletary to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Bobby Jackson, Donté Greene, a future first round draft pick and cash.
We have cheap tickets available to see the new-look Sacramento Kings and anchor Kevin Martin. The strategy is to surround the youngster with veterans. That plan continues, but the team has one fewer veteran than planned – In September forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim announced his retirement after 11 seasons.
The Sacramento Kings are in the Northwest Division of the 3-division Western Conference of the National Basketball Association.
