Team History The New York Knicks started as a charter member of the Basketball Association of America in 1946. His NBA career started in 1997, when he became director of player personnel for the Denver Nuggets. He returned to Italy for the 2001 season and then accepted a position as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns in 2002. The next season he was instrumental in the trade that brought Steve Nash to Arizona and turned the club into a contender. In 2003 he was made head coach. Under him, the team won 50 or more games in four consecutive seasons. There is a new sense of urgency in the Knicks organization going into the 2008-09 season. The Knicks have not won a playoff series since defeating the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Semifinals in the spring of 2000.
