Team History
The Los Angeles Lakers began in 1944 as the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League. The name was changed to the Lakers before the team switched to the rival Basketball Association of America in 1947 and relocated to Minneapolis. In the 1949 the Lakers won the last BAA Championship. In the 1949-50 off-season the NBL and the BAA merged to create the National Basketball Association

The Lakers-Celtics rivalry is the longest and fiercest in the league. The two teams have met in the NBA Finals 11 times, with the Celtics dominating their western rivals 9-2. Their most recent meeting was this past spring. The Lakers were dominant right up to the Finals, going 12-3 against Denver, Utah and San Antonio. But in the Finals they were unable to overcome their nemesis, going down in six as the Celtics captured their 17th NBA title.
2008-2009
The Los Angeles Lakers are being picked to return to the Finals, if not win it all, in 2009. Few changes were made in the off-season to the team that won 57 games in 2007-08. Ariza and Bynum are healthy and Ariza, acquired mid-season, will be with the team from the start, which can’t be a bad thing. The only player lost from last years is Ronny Turiaf, a great off the bench guy. But his value to other teams was greater than his value to the Lakers, a team that has to constantly struggle to comply with the league salary cap.
