Team History The Houston Rockets began life as the San Diego Rockets and entered the NBA as an expansion team for the 1967-68 season. Wins were scarce and attendance poor. On August 25 the Rockets sent Singletary to the Suns for D.J. Strawberry. On August 29 they sent Ewing, Jr. to the New York Knicks in exchange for the rights to French center Frederic Weis.
