Team History
The Golden State Warriors were founded in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors, charter members of the Basketball Association of America. As such, they became founding members of the NBA when the BBA and the National Basketball League merged in 1949 to create the National Basketball Association. In 1962 the team relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area and became the San Francisco Warriors. The team had an odd business model by which they played at a number of stadiums in the area. Most home games were at the Cow Palace, but they also played home games in Oakland and San Jose. After 1966, when the Oakland Coliseum Arena opened, the Warriors began scheduling fewer and fewer Cow Palace home games. In 1971 the team changed its name to the Golden State Warriors and played all home games in Oakland with the exception of 6 homies played in San Diego. None were played in San Francisco. Three years later the Warriors won their only championship on the West Coast, taking the 1975 NBA championship in a four game sweep of the heavily favored Washington Bullets.
In 2007 the Warriors played their first playoff game since the early Nineties, defeating the Dallas Mavericks 97–85. They eventually won the series, becoming the first #8 seed to beat a #1 seed in a seven-game series. It was the team’s first playoff series win in sixteen years. They lost in the Conference Semifinals in five to the Utah Jazz.
Expectations are high for the Warriors were high in 2007-2008. They had established themselves as playoff contenders for the first time in the memory of many fans. On April 14, 2008, the Phoenix Suns eliminated the Warriors from the 2008 Western Conference Playoffs.
2008-2009
The Warriors sold out nearly every home game during the 2007-08 season, with the highest average attendance, 19,631 per game, in the team’s 42 year history. Baron Davis opted out of the last year of his contract with Golden State, free agent Gilbert Arenas re-signed with the Washington Wizards despite a lucrative offer. A similar offer to Elton Brand was turned down when he accepted an offer from the Philadelphia 76ers. On the plus side, the Warriors signed Ronny Turiaf from the Los Angeles Lakers and Marcus Williams from the New Jersey Nets; they also resigned Andris Biedrins and Monta Ellis, fended off an offer from the Clippers to Kelenna Azubuike and signed second round draft pick Richard Hendrix.
