Team History The Golden State Warriors were founded in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors, charter members of the Basketball Association of America. As such, they became founding members of the NBA when the BBA and the National Basketball League merged in 1949 to create the National Basketball Association. In 1962 the team relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area and became the San Francisco Warriors. The team had an odd business model by which they played at a number of stadiums in the area. Most home games were at the Cow Palace, but they also played home games in Oakland and San Jose. Three years later the Warriors won their only championship on the West Coast, taking the 1975 NBA championship in a four game sweep of the heavily favored Washington Bullets. In 2007 the Warriors played their first playoff game since the early Nineties, defeating the Dallas Mavericks 97–85. They eventually won the series, becoming the first #8 seed to beat a #1 seed in a seven-game series. It was the team’s first playoff series win in sixteen years. They lost in the Conference Semifinals in five to the Utah Jazz. Expectations are high for the Warriors were high in 2007-2008. They had established themselves as playoff contenders for the first time in the memory of many fans. On April 14, 2008, the Phoenix Suns eliminated the Warriors from the 2008 Western Conference Playoffs. 2008-2009 The Warriors sold out nearly every home game during the 2007-08 season, with the highest average attendance, 19,631 per game, in the team’s 42 year history.
