Team History
The Boston Celtics came into being in 1946 as a founding franchise of the Basketball Association of America. The Association was the brainchild of Boston Gardens owner Walter Brown, who was looking for a second attraction to fill the seats at the Gardens when his NHL Bruins were out of town. The Celtics became a founding member of the NBA when it was formed by the 1949 merger of the BBA and the National Basketball League that formed the NBA. The Boston Celtics are to basketball what the New York Yankees are to baseball. In the past 31 years the Celtics have been NBA Eastern Conference champs 16 times. The team is the reigning NBA Champ.
The 2008 National Basketball Association Title marked the first time the Celtics had won more than a Semifinal series since 1987. Many are calling this the return of the Boston Celtics to the dynasty the organization enjoyed from 1946 to 1995, when the team never went more than two seasons out of the playoffs – and then only three times.
The Celtic’s head coach is Glenn “Doc” Rivers. In 2004 he became the sixteenth head coach in the franchise’s 64 year history. In his first season he coached his team to its first division title in 13 seasons.
2008-2009
The Green and White defeated the Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons on the way to taking the Los Angeles Lakers in six to become the 2008 NBA Champions.
