In 2005 the Montreal Expos left Canada for Washington, DC, returning professional baseball to the American capitol for the first time since the Washington Senators left 33 years earlier to become the Texas Rangers. The Washington Nationals started as the Montreal Expos. The Expos, along with the San Diego Padres, were 1969 National League expansion franchises. The Expos were the first major league baseball team in Canada. In the franchise’s 36 seasons in Montreal the Expos only made the postseason once, in the 1981 season, when both of the first two rounds were best-of-five. The Expos defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Divisional Series and lost in the NLCS to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Both series went the distance. In the strike-shortened 1994 season, when play was halted in August and the post season was cancelled due to a labor shortage, the biggest losers were Expos fans. When play was halted their team was playing .649 baseball, a 70-49 record - the best in baseball.
Since starting play as the Washington Nationals the club has had one .500 season – its first, in 2005. In 2006 new owner Ted Lerner hired Stan Kasten as team president. Kasten was president of Atlanta Braves during their run of 14 consecutive National League East titles. Kasten developed a long range plan that included investing in the farm system and draft picks so the franchise would have a competitive team to complement the new stadium. The plan looked to be succeeding at the end of the 2007 season, when the club finished 73-89 and out of the basement for the first time since moving to Washington. But in 2008 the team had a major-league worst 59-102 won-loss record. On the upside, the new park, situated near the Anacostia River, with views of the Capitol, has been very well received.
