The Toronto Blue Jays entered Major League Baseball in 1977 as part of a two-team American League expansion that included the Seattle Mariners. When the Montreal Expos moved to Washington, D.C. and became the Washington Nationals after the 2004 season, the Jays became MLB’s only non-US team. Toronto is in the Canadian province of Ontario. But the club went 8-10 through the rest of the season, including losing 5 of 7 to the eventual wild card team, the Boston Red Sox.
Following the 2008 regular season it was announced that Paul Beeston, former Blue Jay president and CEO, would assist in the daily operations for the ball club after current Paul Godfrey steps down as president and CEO at the end of the 2008 calendar year.
