The Los Angeles Dodgers franchise was founded in 1884 as the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers of the American Association. The AA had financial problems and the Dodgers, able to read the handwriting on the dugout wall, switched to the National League in 1890, two seasons before the American Association went bankrupt.
In 1889 the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers name was changed to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. In 1899 the Brooklyn Bridegrooms became the Brooklyn Superbas. From 1911-13 they were the Brooklyn Dodgers, but in 1914 tried out the Brooklyn Robins. The team remained the Robins for 16 seasons before going back to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1931. Regardless the name, the franchise could not win the World Series. From the club’s 1890 entry into the National League until the team won its first World Series 65 years later, the franchise lost in the Series seven times, including 5 times to their crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees. When the Dodgers beat the Yankees in the 1955 World Series, the party in Brooklyn last for days. The next season they made it back to the Series and lost in 7 to the Yankees. In 1957 the Dodgers finished 2nd in the NL and in the off-season the franchise moved to Los Angeles.
The disappointment Brooklyn felt when the beloved Dodgers abandoned the borough just three seasons after finally defeating the hated Yankees was nothing compared to what happened next. After winning one World Championship in 67 years while playing in Brooklyn, the Dodgers won 3 World Series Championships in their first eight seasons is Los Angeles, including a 4 game humiliation of the 1963 New York Yankees.
All totaled, the Dodgers have won 21 National League Pennants and 6 World Series titles. The club’s most recant appearance in the MLB postseason when they sweot the Chicago Cubs in the divisional round and then fell to the eventual 2008 World Champion Philadelphia Phillies.
