The Florida Marlins are a 1993 National League expansion franchise playing out of Miami Gardens, Florida, a suburb of Miami proper. Home field is Dolphin Stadium, also home to the Miami Dolphins. Marlins ownership has an agreement with Miami-Dade County and the city of Miami to build a half billion dollar ballpark on the site of the Orange Bowl. As part of the deal, the Marlins will become known as the Miami Marlins once the move is made in 2012.
The Florida Marlins have appeared in the postseason twice, 1997 and 2003. Both times they appeared as a wild card team and both times they won the World Series. In 1997 the Marlins swept the San Francisco Giants in the NLDS, eliminated the Atlanta Braves in 6 in the NLCS and became the 1997 World Series Champions by beating the Cleveland Indians in 7. Six years later they repeated the amazing feat, again starting by eliminating the Giants in the NLDS. In the National League Championship Series the upstart Marlins kept the venerable Chicago Cubs from appearing in that club’s first World Series since 1945 and then knocked off the defending American League Champion New York Yankees to become the only team in baseball history with 2 World Series Championships and 0 League Championships. It also made them the only team in the MLB that has never lost a postseason series.
The Marlins started the 2008 season well, and were 10 games over .500 at the 50-game mark. But offensive output declined in August and September and the club finished the 2008 regular season with an 84-77 record, 3rd place in the East Division. In general it was a good season – the pre-season opinion of many was that they would finish last in the competitive East. It was the club’s best finish since the 2003 championship season. Another bright spot was a club record 208 homers.
The Florida Marlins are in the 5-team East Division of the 16-team National League of 30-team Major League Baseball.
