The Baltimore Orioles are one of the American League’s eight founding members. The franchise was originally located Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1901 and was known as the Milwaukee Brewers - no relation to the current franchise of the same name. In 1902 the team moved to St. Louis and was renamed the St. Louis Browns. Fifty-two years later the franchise was moved to Baltimore and was renamed the Baltimore Orioles, the same name used by a National League franchise that played in Baltimore from 1882 to 1899. The Orioles franchise has won 7 American League pennants (1983, 1979, 1971, 1970, 1969, 1966, 1944) and 3 World Series (1983, 1970, 1966). Since 1992 the team has played home games in the Camden Yards’ Oriole Park.
The Baltimore Orioles have appeared in the postseason twice since defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in 5 games to become the 1983 World Champions. In 1996 they beat the Cleveland Indians in the American League Division Series and lost in 5 to New York Yankees in the League Championship round. The following season the Orioles defeated the Seattle Mariners in 4 in the first round and fell to the Cleveland Indians in 6 in the ALCS.
The Orioles finished the 2007 season in fourth place in the AL East with a 69-93 record. The season was notable for two reasons. Reason #1: with the team at 29-40, manager Sam Perlozzo was fired and replaced on interim basis by Dave Trembley, who remains the team manager for 2009. Reason #2: In a home game against the Texas Rangers on August 22/07, the Orioles gave up 30 runs in a 30–3 defeat, setting the modern day record for runs allowed in a single game. After 3 complete innings the Orioles were ahead 3-0. Texas scored 16 runs the 8th and 9th innings.
The Orioles finished the 2008 season in last place with a W-L record of 68-93, identical to the 2007 season save for a late season rain-out that was never played.
