The Texas Longhorns have competed in the Big 12 Conference since it was founded in 1996. Four of the Big 12 schools are in Texas; there are two schools each in Oklahoma and Kansas, and 1 each in Iowa, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri. The Big 12 conference was formed in 1994 when the Southwest Conference agreed to dissolve. Four of the SC’s Texas members (Texas Tech Red Raiders, Baylor Bears, Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies) joined the Big 8, making it the Big 12. It took eighteen months for the Southwest Conference to wind down. Competition as the Big 12 began at the start of the 1996 academic year. Though the Big 12 is the Big 8 plus the four Texas schools, the Big 12 does not claim the Big 8’s statistical history. The Big 12 is divided into two six-team conferences.

Home field for the Longhorns is Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, an outdoor, narueal grass facility on the University of Texas campus in Austin, Texas. Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium is the largest venue in the Big 12 Conference and the fifth largest on-campus stadium in the United States. The attendance record for the facility, 98,518, was set in 2008 when the #1 ranked Longhorns played the sixth-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. This is the current record for the largest crowd ever to watch a Big 12 game and the largest crowd to have ever watched a football game in the State of Texas.
 
The Texas Longhorns are generally credited with 4 national championships. In 2005 the team entered the Orange Bowl ranked #2 in the nation and facing the #1-ranked University of Southern California Trojans. In what is considered by many to be one of the best college football game ever played, the Texas Longhorns won the National Title with a 41 – 38 victory.
 
2009 is Mack Brown’s 12th season as head coach of the Texas Longhorns. Brown came to Austin after spending a decade as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels of the Atlantic Coast Conference. In his tenure at North Carolina, Brown compiled a 69 - 46 record. At the University of Texas he has fared even better, going 115 – 26 over the 11 seasons he has completed to date.
 
The 2008 Texas Longhorns started the season ranked 10th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. After winning their first four games they were ranked 5th and then in the annual Red River Shootout the Longhorns defeated the #1-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. That brought the team its first #1 ranking of the season, but a last second loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders likely cost the Longhorns a shot at the National Title. The Longhorns finished the 2008 regular season with a 49 – 9 win over Texas A&M and a 24 – 10 win over the Big 10’s Ohio State Buckeyes in the Fiesta Bowl.
