The Oklahoma State Cowboys compete in the Big 12 Conference, which began competition in 1996. Four of the Big 12 schools are in Texas; there are two schools each in Oklahoma and Kansas, and 1 each in Iowa, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri. The Big 12 conference was formed in 1994 when the Southwest Conference agreed to dissolve. The four Texas members (Baylor Bears, Texas Longhorns, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and the Texas A&M Aggies) joined the Big 8, making it the Big 12. It took eighteen months for the Southwest Conference to wind down. Competition as the Big 12 began at the start of the 1996 academic year. Though the Big 12 is the Big 8 plus the four Texas schools, the Big 12 does not claim the Big 8’s statistical history.

Home field for the Oklahoma State Cowboys is Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, OK. The 62,000-seat out door stadium was named after T. Boone Pickens, the famous Texas oilman and Oklahoma State alumnus, in 2003. Mr. Pickens donated $165 million to the Oklahoma State athletic faculty in 2002. The donation assisted in a $250 million project that saw the 80+ year old Lewis Field facility essentially demolished and a new stadium built on the site. The University still claims it as the original facility with a quarter of a billion dollar facelift and new name, preserving “oldest stadium in the Big 12” bragging rights.
 
The Oklahoma State Cowboys finished the 2008 season a respectable 9 and 3 overall, 5 – 3 in conference play. An identical record got the Missouri Tigers in the Championship game representing the Big 12 North Division, but the Cowboys play in the Big South, where no less than 3 teams tied for first with 7 – 1 conference records and 11 – 1 overall: the Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Tech Red Raiders.
 
Head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys is Michael Ray Gundy, quarterback of the Cowboys from 1986 - 1989. This is Gundy’s first head coaching position. Following his graduation from Oklahoma State, Gundy stayed with the Oklahoma State football program for as a position coach, coaching wide receivers (1990) and quarterbacks (1991 – 1993). He was promoted to offensive coordinator for the 1994 and 1995 seasons. In 1996 Gundy left Oklahoma State to work in a different school’s football program for the first time since graduating highschool, 11 years before. He was the Baylor University QB coach for the 1996 season and was QB coach for the University of Maryland Terrapins for four seasons, 1997 – 2000. In 2001 Gundy returned to his alma mater as the quarterback coach and in 2005 he was hired to replace retiring head coach Bob Simmons. In his 4 seasons as head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys Gundy has compiled a won – loss record of 27 – 23 and has led his team to three boel games, winning the 2006 Independence Bowl and the 2007 Insight Bowl and losing the 2008 Holiday Bowl.
