The University of Oklahoma Sooners have competed in the Big 12 Conference since it was founded in 1996. Four of the Big 12 schools are in Texas; there are two schools each in Oklahoma and Kansas, and 1 each in Iowa, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri. The Big 12 conference was formed in 1994 when the Southwest Conference agreed to dissolve. Four of the Texas members (Texas Tech Red Raiders, Baylor Bears, Texas A&M Aggies and the Texas Longhorns) joined the Big 8, making it the Big 12. It took eighteen months for the Southwest Conference to wind down. Competition as the Big 12 began at the start of the 1996 academic year. Though the Big 12 is the Big 8 plus the four Texas schools, the Big 12 does not claim the Big 8’s statistical history. The Big 12 is divided into two six-team conferences.

Home field for the Sooners is the 82,112-capacity Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman, Oklahoma. With standing room, the record attendance for the facility is 85,646, a record set at a 2008 regular season game against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
 
The University of Oklahoma Sooners are one of the most successful football programs in the NCAA. The program dates its beginnings to an 1895 game against a team made of Norman locals. The Sooners failed to make a first down and lost, 37-0. It was under Bennie Owen, the school’s first full time head coach (1905-1926), that the Sooners established themselves as a football powerhouse, going 122 – 54 – 16 in Owen’s 22 seasons, a winning percentage of .677.
 
Of the 21 men who have served as head coach of the Sooners over the team’s 113+ years, only 3 others have won over 100 games. Bud Wilkinson led the team from 1947 to 1963 and retired with a .827 winning percentage and a record of 145 – 29 – 4 over 17 seasons. Barry Switzer holds the record for highest winning percentage by a Sooners head coach at .837, set between 1973 – 1988 with a record of 157 – 29 – 4. The third 100-W man is current head coach Bob Stoops. Since the 1999 season Stoops and the Sooners have compiled a record of 102 – 22, a winning percentage of 820.
