Pat Fitzgerald, a College Hall of Fame Northwestern Wildcats linebacker in the mid-Nineties, became linebacker coach for his alma mater in 2001. Following the sudden loss of 52-year old head coach Randy Walker to a heart attack in June, 2006, Fitzgerald was named the youngest coach in the Big Ten – all of 31. He has the unenviable task of bringing about a sea-change in the hard-luck Wildcats, the same as he did when he played on the team and brought it to the conference championship twice. That old habits die hard was proved in Fitzgerald’s 8th game as head coach. On October 21, 2006 the Wildcats blew the largest lead (35 points) ever blown in college ball a 41-38 loss to Michigan State in a game they led 38-5 with less than 10 minutes left in the third quarter. on.
 
In three seasons at Northwestern Fitzgerald has gone 4 - 8 (2006), 6 - 6 (2007) and 9 – 4 (2008). The 2008 finish was good enough for 4th in the conference and a slot in the Alamo Bowl.
 
Postseason
 
The Northwestern Wildcats have been to 6 postseason bowl games and have a record of 1-5. The one win was the 1949 Rose Bowl. The team most recently appeared in the postseason in the 2008 Alamo Bowl, a 30 – 23 loss to the Missouri Tigers.
