Head Coach
 
Head coach of the University of Illinois Fighting Illini football team is Ron Zook. Zook spent 24 seasons as a football coach at every level of play from high school to the NFL before becoming a head coach for the first time, in 2002. Having spent the previous season as the defensive coordinator for the NFL New Orleans Saints, Zook was hired by the University of Florida Gators to replace Steve Spurrier, who had accepted an offer to coach the Washington Redskins. Spurrier proved a hard act to follow and Zook was let go after three seasons; his 31 – 14 record was considered underachieving by Gator football standards and the team lost more home games in Zook’s 3 seasons than they had in Spurrier’s 12. 
 
Since coming to the Illini for the 2005 season Zook’s teams have generally fared poorly, going 18 – 30 over 4 seasons through 2008.
 
Postseason
 
The Fighting Illini have appeared in 15 postseason bowl games, starting with the 1947 Rose Bowl. The team’s most recent appearance was in the 2008 Rose Bowl, held at the end of the 2007 season on January 1st, 2008. The game ended as a 49 – 17 loss to the University of Southern California Trojans.
