The Big 12 conference was formed in 1994 when the Southwest Conference agreed to dissolve. Four of the Texas members (Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Baylor Bears) joined the Big 8, making it the Big 12. The first Big 12 Championship game was played following the end of the first regular season of Big 12 football, in 1996. The game pits the Divisional Champions from the regular season against each other and usually alternates between sites in a home state of a member of the South Division (Texas or Oklahoma) and sites in a home state of a member of the North Division (Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska or Missouri). Both the 2009 and 2010 Big 12 Championship games will be hosted at the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium. The game usually takes place in the first week of December.

The most recent Big 12 Championship game was held on December 6, 2008, and featured a rematch of the 2007 contestants. The Oklahoma Sooners were the designated home team against the Missouri Tigers. Oklahoma won its 6^th Big 12 Championship in nine years, hammering the Tigers 62 – 21. The 41-point loss did not set a record for largest final point differential. That record stands at 67 points, a 3 – 70 loss by the Colorado Buffaloes to the Texas Longhorns in the 2005 Big 12 Championship.
