Villanova Wildcats

Villanova University is a Catholic university in Radnor Township, a suburb of Philadelphia. Villanova intercollegiate athletic teams are known as the Wildcats. Villanova competes in the Big East athletic conference and played in the first-ever Final Four in 1939, the first season the NCAA held a post-season tournament. Awesomeseating.com is your go-to broker for Villanova Wildcats tickets, NCAA Basketball tickets and Big East basketball tickets. Of the 16 teams in the Big East, 9 were ranked in the Top 25 by the Associated Press and ESPN at the start of the 2008-09 season; Pittsburgh Panthers, Connecticut Huskies, Georgetown Hoyas, Syracuse Orangemen, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Marquette Golden Eagles, Villanova Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals and West Virginia Mountaineers.

The complete list of Big East teams is as follows:

The Villanova Wildcats men’s basketball team has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 29 times, including the past 4 seasons. In those 29 tournaments the Wildcats have made it to the Sweet Sixteen 16 times and the Elite Eight 11 times. It is at the Elite Eight level that the wheels typically come off for the Wildcats. They have only made it to the Final Four 3 times, including the first Final Four in 1939. The Wildcats have won one national title, in 1985.

Head coach of the Villanova Wildcats is Jay Wright. Wright was named head coach of the Villanova men’s basketball program in 2001. A former assistant coach under Rollie Massimino (Villanova head coach 1973 – 1995), Wright was head coach at Hofstra University before accepting the Villanova position. In his seven seasons as Villanova head coach Wright has taken his team to the post-season seven times. In his first three seasons he took the Wildcats to the NIT and since 2005 has taken the team into the NCAA Tournament.

In 2005 the Villanova Wildcats entered the NCAA Tournament as the 5th seed in the East regional on the basis of a 24-8 regular season in the competitive Big East. The team made it to the Sweet Sixteen round before losing to the #1 seed and eventual 2005 national champion North Carolina Tar Heels by one point. That the team accomplished this without starting forward Curtis Sumpter (knee injury) gave the team great hope for 2006.

The Villanova Wildcats entered the 2005-06 season ranked among the top 40 in the nation in the USA Today and AP polls. In the regular season the team only lost three games and entered the 2006 Tournament as the #1 seed. The Wildcat beat Monmouth in the first round, Arizona in the second and Boston College in the Sweet Sixteen to get to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1988. Villanova lost 75-62 to eventual champion Florida, the second consecutive year that Villanova was eliminated by the eventual national champ.

In 2006-2007 the team, composed mainly of freshmen and sophomores, went 22-11 in the regular season and lost in the first round to the Kentucky Wildcats. In the 2008 NCAA Tournament the maturing team made it to the Sweet Sixteen once more before once more falling to the eventual National Champion (Kansas) for the 3rd time in four years .

2009 could be the Villanova Wildcats year: they start the season ranked in the top 25. Whether you’re looking for cheap seats behind the backboards, a luxury sky-box or something closer to courtside, we’re your Awesome ticket broker for Villanova Wildcats tickets for the basketball regular season and Villanova Wildcats postseason tickets.
