The Vanderbilt Commodores compete in the Southeast Conference (SEC), one of the strongest of the Division I athletic conferences. In 1992 the Conference adopted a two-division format, with SEC basketball teams playing a 16-game conference schedule in which each team faces division rivals twice per season and each team from the opposite division once. A year earlier the SEC had expanded from 10 to 12 teams with the addition of the Arkansas Razorbacks and the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks.
The Vanderbilt Commodores are in the SEC East Division. Other members of the SEC East; the Kentucky Wildcats of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, the Florida Gators of the University of Florida in Gainesville, the Georgia Tech Bulldogs of the University of Georgia in Athens and the Tennessee Volunteers of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Teams in the SEC West Division are; the Alabama Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the Arkansas Razorbacks of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, the Auburn Tigers of the University of Auburn in Auburn, Alabama, the LSU Tigers of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, the Ole Miss Running Rebels of the University of Mississippi in Oxford and the Mississippi State Bulldogs of Mississippi State University in Starkville.
The Vanderbilt Commodores have appeared in 9 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Making it won three SEC regular season titles (1965, 1974 and 1993). They have competed in nine NCAA Tournaments, an Elite Eight finish in 1965 being the farthest the Commodores have gone. The team has made 5 appearances sin the Sweet Sixteen, most recently in 2007. The Commodores placed third in the SEC in the 2007-08 season and entered the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament as the 4th seed in the Midwest Regional. The first round of the 2008 Midwest Regional saw upsets of four seeds, including the 83-62 whupping the 13th seed Siena Saints laid on the 4th Vanderbilt Commodores.
Home court for the Vanderbilt Commodores is Memorial Gymnasium, a 14,168-seat multi-purpose facility located in Nashville, Tennessee at 25th Ave. S. and Vanderbilt Place in Nashville.
Vanderbilt Commodores head coach Kevin Stallings has been with the team since the 1999 - 2000 season and was named the 2007 SEC Coach of the Year. On February 26/08 Stallings notched his second victory against a #1 ranked team when the Commodores handed #1-ranked conference-mate Tennessee Volunteers a 72-69 loss.
