The Connecticut Huskies have been to the Elite Eight 7 times since 1990 (1990, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006) and have only made it through to the Final Four twice, in 1999 and 2004. Despite the paucity of Final Four appearances, UConn has made the most of them. In 1999 the Huskies defeated the ACC Duke Blue Devils, 77-74 to become NCAA Division I Champions. In 2004 the Huskies knocked off another Atlanta Coast Conference member, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, to again home a second national title.

Head Coach Jim Calhoun has been head coach of the UConn Huskies since the 1989 season. Prior to taking his position at UConn, Calhoun was head basketball coach at Northeastern University from 1972-1986, compiling a 248-137 won-loss record. In his first eight seasons at Northeastern, Calhoun was never invited to bring his team to the post season NCAA Tournament; in his final six seasons his teams appeared in the Tournament 5 times.

In his 22 seasons at Connecticut, Calhoun has compiled an overall won-loss record of 539-201. The team missed the postseason in 2006-07 after nine straight appearances that included two NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championships.

In 2007-08 the Connecticut Huskies improved on the previous season’s 17-14 eighth place conference finish, going 24-9 overall. In conference play the improvement was even more dramatic, going 6-10 in 2006-07 to 13-5 in 2007-08.
