The UCLA Bruins finished the 2007-08 regular season with a 27-2 record and entered the postseason as the #1 seed in the West Regional. The UCLA Bruins compete in the Pac-10 conference. The Pac-10 was founded in 1959 as the Athletic Association of Western Universities. The AAWU went by the names Big Five, Big Six, and Pacific 8 before becoming the Pac-10 in 1978 with the addition of the University of Arizona Wildcats and the Arizona State Sun Devils. Unique among NCAA Division I athletic conferences, Pac-10 members each have an in-state conference rival. In California, where four of the conference schools are based, the rivalries are between metropolitan areas: the UCLA Bruins and the USC Trojans are both located in Los Angeles; the California Golden Bears and Stanford Cardinals are both located in the San Francisco region.
