The Tennessee Volunteers compete in the Southeast Conference (SEC), one of the strongest of the Division I athletic conferences. In 1992 the Conference adopted a two-division format, with SEC basketball teams playing a 16-game conference schedule in which each team faces division rivals twice per season and each team from the opposite division once. A year earlier the SEC had expanded from 10 to 12 teams with the addition of the Arkansas Razorbacks and the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks.
 
Other members of the SEC East division are; the Kentucky Wildcats of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, the Florida Gators of the University of Florida in Gainesville, the Georgia Tech Bulldogs of the University of Georgia in Athens, and the Vanderbilt Commodores of Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Teams in the SEC West Division are; the Alabama Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the Arkansas Razorbacks of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, the Auburn Tigers of the University of Auburn in Auburn, Alabama, the LSU Tigers of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, the Ole Miss Running Rebels of the University of Mississippi in Oxford and the Mississippi State Bulldogs of Mississippi State University in Starkville.
 
The Tennessee Volunteers have appeared in 16 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournaments. The farthest they have gone has been the Sweet Sixteen Round, where they have been eliminated 5 times: 1967, 1981, 2000 and the two most recent Tournaments, 2007 and 2008. In 2007 the Volunteers finished the regular season 2nd in the SEC with a 22 – 10 record and entered the postseason as the #5 seed in the South Regional. The Volunteers eliminated California State, Long Beach in the first round in a walk, 121 – 86, and then had to hold off the hard-charging Virginia Cavaliers 77-74 in the second. The one-point 85 – 84 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Sweet Sixteen left many believing this was a team that would be back.
 
And back they were. The Tennessee Volunteers took the SEC regular season title and entered the 2008 March Madness as the #2 seed in the East Regional. In the first round the Wildcats eliminated the American University Eagles of the Patriot League, 72 – 57. In the second round they faced the Horizon Conference champion Butler Bulldogs and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen by beating the Bulldogs, 76 – 71. The Wildcats advanced to the Sweet Sixteen to face Louisville Cardinals of the Big East and came up flat, losing by 19, 79 - 60.
 
Expect the Tennessee Volunteers to be in the hunt for the national title when March Madness breaks out in 2009. Head coach Bruce Pearl was named the 2008 SEC Coach of the Year.
