Since 1980 the Syracuse Orangemen have been Big East regular season champs 7 times, most recently in 2003, when the Orangemen conquered the Big East as prelude to their first NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship of the post-Tournament era.
 
The Syracuse Orangemen hold the current NCAA record for most consecutive winning seasons (38 and counting). They have appeared in 31 NCAA Tournament, making it to the Final Four 4 times; 1975, 1987, 1996 and 2003. The Orangemen hold a great historical home court advantage. Prior to losing to the University of Massachusetts Minutemen in the opening round of the 2008 National Invitational Tournament, only one team had ever beaten Syracuse at home more than once in a season - Penn State in the 1922-23 season.
 
In the 2003 championship season the Orangemen finished the regular season in a tie for first in the Big East and entered the post-season as the third seed in the East Regional, behind the Oklahoma Sooners and Wake Forest. In the first round the Orangemen knocked off the 14th seed, Manhattan College, 76-65. In the second round, 6th seed Oklahoma State was the opponent and the Orangemen eliminated the Cowboys 68-56 and advanced to a Sweet Sixteen match up with the 10th seed Auburn Tigers. In a 1 point squeaker, 79-78, the Orangemen sent the Tigers packing. This set up an Elite Eight confrontation with the #1 seed Sooners. The Orangemen were way too much for the Oklahoma team and advanced to the Final Four with a 63-47 win. Syracuse knocked off Texas 95-84 and prepared to take on the University of Kansas Jayhawks. In a confrontation between long-time head coaches, neither of whom had won a national title, Jim Boeheim’s Orangemen won the national title with an 81-78 victory over Roy Williams’ Jayhawks.
