Intercollegiate athletic teams at NYC’s St. John’s University are called Red Storm. St. John’s University (school logo is the letters STJ) is a Roman Catholic university originally located in located in Bedford-Stuyvesant, where it was founded in 1870. In 1960 the school was moved to its current location on 105 acres in Queens, NY.

St. John's men’s basketball is in the rather unique position of having 3 venues available for home court. The venues are Carnesecca Arena, Madison Square Gardens and Taffner Field House.

Known as Alumni Hall until 2004, when it was renamed to honor Hall of Fame Coach Lou Carnesecca, Carnesecca Arena is a 6,000 seat facility in Queens. Until 2005 it was the exclusive home court for the St. John’s University Red Storm women’s basketball team and for many years has been used by the men’s team for games that are not expected to draw a large enough crowd to warrant renting out Madison Square Gardens. In 2005 St. John’s completed construction of Taffner Field House. The original plan was to have the 47,000 square foot facility serve as home court for the men’s basketball team, but for unknown reasons the facility is today rarely used for men’s basketball. Over the 2008-09 regular season St. John's Red Storm will play 22 home games, including the two home games they play in the annual Aeropostale Holiday Festival. Of these 22 games, only one game will be played at the Taffner. The other 21 games split slightly for MSG, 11-10.

As of the end of the 2006-07 season St. John’s was 5th among all active college basketball teams in total wins with 1673 and had the 7th best winning percentage in the NCAA (.680). However, of the other top 5 teams in terms of NCAA wins (Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, and St. John) only St. John’s has never won an NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship and, according to Wikipedia, “currently holds the NCCA Division I record for most NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship [Tournament] appearances without a championship.”

Midway through the 2003-04 season head coach Mike Jarvis was fired and the reigns to the men’s basketball team were handed to Norm Roberts, who had worked for many years as an assistant to Bill Self, who hired Roberts in 1996 while Self was head coach at Oral Roberts University. Roberts went with Self to Tulsa (1998), Illinois (2000) and Kansas (2003) before striking out on his own to accept his first-ever head coaching position.
