South Florida Bulls
Intercollegiate athletic teams at the University of South Florida are known as the Bulls. USF is a member of the Big East athletic conference, which it joined in 2005. In the team’s 3 complete seasons in the Big East the men’s basketball team has an overall record of 31 wins against 59 losses. In conference games the South Florida Bulls went 1-15 and finished last in their debut Big East season, 2005-06; 3-13 and finished 13th in the 2006-07 season and 3-15 and a 15th out of 16 finish in 2007-08. The totals on conference wins and losses since joining the Big East are 7-43. The switch from 16 to 18 conference games in the 2006-07 season seems to have been a poor choice for USF. In the 4 extra conference games the Bulls played in 2006-08 they went 0-4.

Head coach of men’s basketball at South Florida is Stan Heath, who was hired in 2007. Heath has been around college ball in a coaching capacity since 1988, when he landed an assistant coach job at Hillsdale College in central Michigan. Between 1988 and 2001 Heath worked as and assistant basketball coach at Hillsdale, Albion, Wayne State, Bowling Green, and Michigan State.
In 2001 Heath was hired as head coach at Kent State, in the Mid-America Conference. He only stayed a season, but it was a good one. The Kent State Golden Flashes were an undefeated 11-0 at home. Their season ended with a loss in the Elite Eight of the 2001 NCAA Tournament and a 30-6 record on the year.
From Kent State Heath went to Arkansas. The Razorbacks’ basketball program was in disarray following the firing of head coach Nolan Richardson, who was terminated after claiming he was being mistreated because he was African American. A number of players and recruits left the program in the aftermath of the firing. Despite this, the team never fared worse than .500 in conference play in Heath’s 5 seasons. In 2006-07, his final year as a Razorback, Heath coached his team to a 15-1 record in the Southeast Conference, 21-14 overall and an invitation to the NCAA Tournament.
In his first season with the University of South Florida (2007-08) expectations were low. The Bulls were clearly not competitive in the tough Big East and a recruiting program takes time to build. Expectations going forward, however, will be high.
