Since 1977 home court for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights has been the Rack, an 8,000-seat multi-purpose arena on the Livingston Campus of the State University of New Jersey in Piscataway, New Jersey. Hill was promoted to head coach of the Rutger’s men’s basketball program in 2006. In his first season as head coach, Hill’s Rutgers Scarlet Knights finished the 2006-07 season in next to last place in the Big East with a 3-13 conference record and a 10-19 record overall. In the Big East, only the Cincinnati Bearcats fared worse.

When the Bearcats improved to 10^th place in 2007-08, there was nothing between the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the Big East cellar. The team finished last in the conference with a conference record of 3-15 and an overall record of 11-20.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have not finished above .500 since 2006, when the team went 19-14 (7-9 in conference play) and finished 10^th in the Big East.
