Providence Friars
Providence College is a small Catholic college (approximate undergraduate enrollment, 4,000) in Providence, the capital city of Rhode Island state. Inter-collegiate athletic teams at Providence College are called the Providence Friars, in acknowledgement of the Roman Catholic Dominican order that founded and runs the school. Small as it is, Providence competes in the Division I Big East Conference.

The Providence College Friars have been to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament 15 times and have made it as far as the Final Four twice, in 1973 and 1987. The late Joe Mullaney, the NBA coach who invented the zone defense, coached at Providence for the first 14 years of his head coaching career, 1955-69.
In the 2008-09 regular season the Friars will play 32 games against 29 opponents. Fifteen conference games are on the schedule including three home-and-home series. The 3 home-and-homes – Rutgers, the Villanova Wildcats and the University of Cincinnati Bearcats – are the only teams the Friars will see twice.

The Providence Friars meet Big East opponents DePaul, Marquette, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh Panthers, St. John and Syracuse at home.
