Head coach of the Pittsburgh Panthers is Jamie Dixon. Dixon was an assistant under the previous head coach, Ben Howland, who took over University of Pittsburgh basketball head coaching duties in 1999. Howland was named NCAA coach of the year in 2002 and accepted an offer to bring his style of defensive to the University of California at Los Angeles’ UCLA Bruins basketball program the following year.
 
During Howland’s tenure, the Panthers improved to a team consistently ranked in the top 10 and that trend has remained strong under Dixon. In his 5 complete seasons as head coach Dixon has compiled a record of 132 wins versus 40 losses, registering a third straight Big East regular season championship, two NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances and another appearance in the Big East Tournament championship game.
