The Fighting Irish have a 30-33 record in 29 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 2007 and 2008. In those 29 appearances the team has appeared in the second round 21 times, the Sweet Sixteen 15 times, the Elite Eight 5 times and the Final Four once. The Fighting Irish have never won an NCAA national title in men’s basketball in the post-Tournament (1939) era.

Since 2000, head coach of the Fighting Irish has been Michael Brey. Brey began his career as a basketball coach after graduating from George Washington University in 1982. He returned to his high school alma mater, DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, and worked as an assistant under Morgan Wootten. In the three seasons that Brey had played varsity high school basketball the team record was 55-9.

In 1987 Brey accepted his first collegiate-level coaching position, assisting Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of the Duke University Blue Devils. In 1995 he took over his first head coaching position, coaching the Fighting Blue Hens of the University of Delaware. Under Brey’s leadership, the Hens went 99-52 over five years, taking two America East Conference Championships and two trips to the NCAA Tournament.

In 2000, Michael Brey succeeded Matt Doherty as head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball team. When Brey was hired, Notre Dame had not been to the NCAA Tournament in a decade. Under Brey the Fighting Irish returned to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first three seasons, including a 2003 Sweet Sixteen appearance.

Notre Dame finished the 2007 regular season with a record of 24-6; good enough for #6 seed in that year’s Midwest Regional. The team was upset in the first round by Winthrop University, 74-64. In 2008 the Irish finished another stellar regular season with a 24-6 record, giving the team an .800 winning percentage for the second consecutive year. They entered the East Regional preliminary round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament as the #5 seed and eliminated the #12 seed George Mason Patriots before falling 61-41 to the Washington State Cougars in round two.
