The Mississippi State Bulldogs are an original member of the Southeast Conference (SEC), one of the strongest of the Division I athletic conferences. In 1992 the Conference adopted a two-division format, with SEC basketball teams playing a 16-game conference schedule in which each team faces division rivals twice per season and each team from the opposite division once. In 1991 the SEC expanded from 10 to 12 teams with the addition of the Arkansas Razorbacks and the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs play in the SEC West Division; other members of the West Division are; the Alabama Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the Arkansas Razorbacks of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, the Auburn Tigers of the University of Auburn in Auburn, Alabama, the LSU Tigers of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and the Ole Miss Running Rebels of the University of Mississippi in Oxford. Members of the SEC East division are; the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, the Florida Gators of the University of Florida in Gainesville, the Georgia Tech Bulldogs of the University of Georgia in Athens, the Kentucky Wildcats of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, the Tennessee Volunteers of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and the Vanderbilt Commodores of Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs have won the SEC Tournament twice, in 1996 and 2002. The team has been part of March Madness nine times, with eight of those appearances occurring since 1991. The Bulldogs have only been able to get past the second round twice, in 1995 and 1996. The 1996 Bulldogs made it all the way to the Final Four.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs’ most recent appearance in the post season was a 2008 trip to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Bulldogs entered the South Regional as the #8 seed based on a 21-9 finish in the regular season. They faced the 9th seed Oregon Ducks of the Pac-10 in the first round. Down by 13 at one point early in the second half, the Duck defense collapsed as Bulldogs rallied to advance to the second round with a 76 – 69 win. There the Bulldogs came up against the #1 seed Memphis Tigers of Conference USA. The Bulldogs gave the Tigers all they could handle and lost by the margin of a three-pointer. The Memphis Tigers went all the way to the championship game before losing the 2008 men’s basketball national title championship to the Kansas Jayhawks, 75-68.
Rick Stansbury, head coach the Bulldogs, has been with the Mississippi State men’s basketball program since 1990. He worked as an assistant coach for 9 seasons before being promoted to head coach for the 1998-99 season. To the end of the 2007-08 season Stansbury had compiled a record of 208-115.
