Ole Miss Running Rebels
 
The Ole Miss Running Rebels are an original member of the Southeast Conference (SEC), one of the strongest of the Division I athletic conferences. In 1991 the SEC expanded from 10 to 12 teams with the addition of the Arkansas Razorbacks and the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks. In 1992 the Conference adopted a two-division format, with SEC basketball teams playing a 16-game conference schedule in which each team faces division rivals twice per season and each team from the opposite division once.
 
The Ole Miss Running Rebels play in the SEC West Division; other members of the West Division are; the Alabama Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the Arkansas Razorbacks of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, the Auburn Tigers of the University of Auburn in Auburn, Alabama, the LSU Tigers of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and the Mississippi State Bulldogs of Mississippi State University in Starkville.
 
Members of the SEC East division are; the Florida Gators of the University of Florida in Gainesville, the Georgia Tech Bulldogs of the University of Georgia in Athens, the Kentucky Wildcats of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, the Tennessee Volunteers of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and the Vanderbilt Commodores of Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Ole Miss Running Rebels head coach Andy Kennedy was hired in 2007, replacing Rod Barnes, who led the team to a 141-109 record in eight seasons as head coach (1999 – 2006). In his first season as head coach Kennedy led the team to a first place tie with intra-state rival Mississippi State Bulldogs in the SEC West. The accomplishment is less impressive than it sounds – a .500 conference record was good enough for 1st in the West that season as the East dominated the conference with only the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks finishing with a worse record than the first place teams in the West. Nevertheless, the showing was good enough to that Kennedy was named the Associated Press 2007 SEC Coach of the Year. Overall, the Ole Miss Running Rebels have won the SEC West Division four times: 1997, 1998, 2001, and 2007.
 
In 2007-08 the Running Rebels went only 7-9 in conference play, but 24-11 overall, postseason included. The overall winning percentage was third best in the SEC, behind only the Tennessee Volunteers’ .861 and the Vanderbilt Commodores’ .765. The Ole Miss Running Rebels made it to the Final Four of the National Invitational Tournament.
