Kentucky first appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 1942. In March of 2008 the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team appeared in its 49th NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The results were a disappointing end to a disappointing year. The Kentucky Wildcats finished the regular season 4th in the SEC, 22-12 overall. The team entered the post season as the 11th seed in the South Regional and it was all over a game later as the Wildcats fell to 6th seed Marquette, 74-66. The Wildcats were down two with 22 seconds remaining but lost the game on in-bound steals and Marquette’s cool at the free throw line.
 
The Kentucky Wildcats are an original member of the Southeast Conference (SEC), one of the strongest of the Division I athletic conferences. In 1992 the Conference adopted a two-division format, with SEC basketball teams playing a 16-game conference schedule in which each team faces division rivals twice per season and each team from the opposite division once. In 1991 the SEC expanded from 10 to 12 teams with the addition of the Arkansas Razorbacks and the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks.
 
The Kentucky Wildcats play in the SEC East Division; other members of the SEC East division are; the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, the Florida Gators of the University of Florida in Gainesville, the Georgia Tech Bulldogs of the University of Georgia in Athens, the Tennessee Volunteers of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and the Vanderbilt Commodores of Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Teams in the SEC West Division are; the Alabama Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the Arkansas Razorbacks of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, the Auburn Tigers of the University of Auburn in Auburn, Alabama, the LSU Tigers of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, the Ole Miss Running Rebels of the University of Mississippi in Oxford and the Mississippi State Bulldogs of Mississippi State University in Starkville.
