The University of Kansas Jayhawks have an intense intra-state and intra-conference rivalry with the Kansas State Wildcats. In 8 of the 12 seasons since the Big 8 became the Big 12 the Jayhawks have been regular season conference champions. The Kansas Jayhawks have made 37 appearances in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, reaching the Final Four 13 times. Of those 13 Final Four appearances the Jayhawks have reached the championship game 8 times. In championship play their record is 3-5, winning the national title in 1952, 1988 and 2008.
 
The Kansas Jayhawks finished the 2007-08 regular season with a 25-8 record and were one of 6 Big 12 teams to go to the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The others were the University of Baylor Bears, Texas A&M Aggies, University of Texas Longhorns, Kansas State Wildcats and University of Oklahoma Sooners. The Jayhawks entered the Tournament as the #1 seed in the Midwest Regional. In the first round the Jayhawks lit the Portland State Vikings’ ship and sent them out to sea, 85-61. UNLV was the next opponent and the Jayhawks tripped up the Runnin’ Rebels, 75-56. In the Sweet Sixteen round the Villanova Wildcats were eliminated, 72-57. 
 
Going into the Elite Eight the Kansas Jayhawks looked almost invincible, winning their first 3 matches by an average of just fractionally under 20 points per game. But the Jays’ Elite Eight opponents, the Southern Conference’s Davidson Wildcats, were looking like the immovable object to the Jays’ irresistible force. The outcome of the game was in doubt right up to the final buzzer, when the Wildcats last shot missed at the buzzer, allowing the Jayhawks to snap the Wildcats’ 25 game winning streak.
 
The Jayhawks went on to defeat the North Carolina Tar Heels 84-66 in the Semifinal Round and won the national title by defeating the Memphis Tigers 75-68 in overtime.
