The Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team plays in the 16-team Big East conference. Of the 16 teams in the Big East, 9 were ranked in the Top 25 by the Associated Press and ESPN at the start of the 2008-09 season; Pittsburgh Panthers, Connecticut Huskies, Georgetown Hoyas, Syracuse Orangemen, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Marquette Golden Eagles, Villanova Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals and West Virginia Mountaineers.

The Georgetown Hoyas have made 25 NCAA Tournament appearances, 24 of them since 1974. The Hoyas have appeared 5 times in the Final Four, most recently in 2007.
 
Following the end of the 2004 season Hoyas head coach Craig Esherick was let go after missing the NCAA Tournament 4 times in 5 years. His replacement is John Thompson III, son of John Thompson, the legendary Hoyas coach from 1972-99. Georgetown is Thompson’s second head coaching position. Prior to coming to Georgetown he spent ten seasons coaching basketball at Princeton, the final 3 as head coach. As Princeton head coach he compiled a won-loss record of 68-42.
 
In his first season as Hoyas head coach (2004-05), the team finished 19-13 overall with an 8-8 record in conference play, which tied the team for 7th in the Big East and out of the NCAA Tournament, though the team did make it to the NIT Quarterfinals.
 
The 2005-06 Hoyas were unranked. They started 11-4 and then upset the #1 Duke University Blue Devils, the Hoya’s first win over a #1 ranked team in over twenty years. The Hoyas finished the season 23-10, 10-6 in conference play, and made it all the way to the Sweet Sixteen. 2006-07 was even better than the previous season, with the team hitting the 30-win mark (30-7), going 13-3 in conference play and making it to the Final Four before falling to Ohio State.
 
The 2007-08 Hoyas finished with a regular season record of 27-5, good enough to take the Big East regular season title. The accomplishment was diminished when the club lost to the Pittsburgh Panthers in the conference championship game. In the 2008 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament the Hoyas were the #2 seed in the Midwest Regional. After eliminating the UMBC Retrievers in the first round the Hoyas were upset by the Davidson Wildcats 70-64 in the second.
