Of the 16 teams in the Big East, 9 were ranked in the Top 25 by the Associated Press and ESPN at the start of the 2008-09 season; Pittsburgh Panthers, Connecticut Huskies, Georgetown Hoyas, Syracuse Orangemen, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Marquette Golden Eagles, Villanova Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals and West Virginia Mountaineers.

The Cincinnati Bearcats have appeared in 24 NCAA Tournaments since 1958 and have a 44-22 record in NCAA Tournament play. The Bearcats have been in the Final Four 6 times, but 5 of those appearance occurred in 1959-63. In the 45+ years since 1963 the Cincinnati Bearcats have made it to the Sweet Sixteen 4 times (1992, 1993, 1996 and 2001), the Elite Eight twice (1993, 1996) and one appearance in the Final Four in 1992. In 2006 the team missed the post-season, ending a streak of 14 consecutive trips to the final 64. They have not been back since.

In March of 2006 Cincinnati Bearcats head coach Mick Cronin was named the 26th men’s basketball head coach in UC history. Cronin is a Cincinnati native and University of Cincinnati alumni. He began his coaching career as a Bearcat assistant coach from 1997-2001. In 2001 Cronin accepted a similar position with the Louisville Cardinals, where he remained for two seasons before accepting a head coaching offer from Murray State of the Ohio Valley Conference. In his three seasons at Murray State (2003-2006) Cronin went 69-24 overall and 42-10 in conference play. His Murray State teams made the NCAA Tournament 2 seasons out of three. In his two seasons with the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, Head Coach Mike Cronin has faired less well, going 24-38 overall and 10-24 within the conference.

Two Cincinnati Bearcats alumni are currently active in the NBA; Jason Maxell is a forward for the Detroit Pistons; Kenyon Martin is a forward for the Denver Nuggets.
