The Big 12 conference was formed in 1994 when the Southwest Conference agreed to disband and four of its Texas members (Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Baylor Bears) agreed to join the Big 8, making the Big 8 the Big 12. It took a couple of seasons for the Southwest Conference to wind down operations and competition as the Big 12 did not begin until the start of the 1996 football season. Though the Big 12 is the old Big 8 plus the four Texas schools, the Big 12 does not claim the Big 8’s statistical history. Home court for the Baylor Bears is the Ferrell Center, a 10,284-seat arena on the banks of the Brazos River in Waco Texas. The Bears have appeared in 5 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournaments, starting in 1946. Of those 5 appearance the Bears made it to the Final Four twice (1948 and 1950) and to the championship game once (1948), which they lost to the Kentucky Wildcats of the Southeastern Conference.

The Baylor Bears’ most recent trip to the Tournament was in 2008. The Bears finished the regular season with a 21-9 record and were one of 6 Big 12 teams to go to the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The others were the 2008 national champion University of Kansas Jayhawks, Texas A&M Aggies, University of Texas Longhorns, Kansas State Wildcats and University of Oklahoma Sooners. The Bears entered the Tournament as the 11^th seed and fell to the Big 10’s Purdue Boilermakers in the first round by a score of 90-79.

Scott Drew is head coach of Baylor Bears men’s basketball program. He came to Baylor after 11 seasons with Valparaiso of the Mid-Continent Conference. Ten of those 11 seasons were spent as an assistant. In his single season as head coach of the Crusaders Drew finished with an overall record of 20-11, including a 12-2 record in conference play. In his 5 seasons with the Bears Drew has compiled a 57-80 record. The 2007-08 season was his first winning season since joining the Baylor faculty.
