Sendack began his coaching career in 1985 as an assistant coach for the Providence Friars. He remained with the Friars until the end of the 1988-89 season, at which time he accepted an assistant coaching position in the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball program. In 1994 Sendak became head coach of the Miami (OH) of the Mid-America Conference. In three seasons with the Redhawks Sendak led his teams to an overall record of 63 wins versus only 26 losses. The Redhawks were less successful in the postseason. In two National Invitational Tournaments and one NCAA Tournament Miami went 1-3.

From Ohio Sendak went to North Carolina State, where he stayed for 10 seasons, compiling an overall 191-132 record with a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
